da bet sport: Sebastian Haller struggled as West Ham drew 1-1 with Sheffield United in the Premier League on Saturday.
On the chalkboard
The striker, signed for a club-record £45m fee in the summer from Eintracht Frankfurt, endured a difficult encounter.
Per WhoScored, he touched the ball a mere 29 times, fewer than any other Hammers player, including the goalkeeper.
He did manage to tally two key passes but he did not have a shot on Dean Henderson’s goal, nor did he complete a dribble.
While Haller was a threat in the air, winning four aerial duels, he was dribbled past once and he did not trouble the opposition defence, failing to make a tackle or an interception.
Instead, it was down to Robert Snodgrass to score the Hammers’ goal, with Andriy Yarmolenko providing the assist.
Poor form
Haller is struggling in Manuel Pellegrini’s system.
He started the season well, scoring three goals in his opening three league games.
However, since his strike against Norwich City in August, Haller has netted once in six outings.
Perhaps that comes down to the supply line, or maybe it is merely the role he is being asked to play.
He has tallied 2.1 shots per game but just 18 shots have come from inside the box, per Understat.
That suggests that he is not quite the poacher the Hammers need; he may need a strike partner, having played alongside Luka Jovic during his time at Frankfurt. In Germany, he scored 33 goals and registered 19 assists in 77 games.
One thing, though, seems clear: if Pellegrini wants to get back to winning ways, he needs to find a way to bring the best out of the Frenchman.
