Manchester United have made their worst start to a season since 1989 and it’s only getting worse for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men following defeat at a struggling Newcastle United before the international break.
The result left the Red Devils in 12th place in the Premier League with just nine points from eight matches and Solskjaer starring the sack in the face.
So with this in mind, here are the 20 Man United managerial replacements the bookies are tipping as potential candidates…
Daniel Farke: 40/1 – Betfair
First up is Norwich City boss Daniel Farke whose team dazzled with their brand of football on their way to lifting the Sky Bet Championship title last season and making a decent start to the new Premier League campaign.
However, the Canaries have since fallen away and are beginning to show signs of relegation form with three defeats on the spin in recent weeks.
Could Old Trafford be Farke’s way out as things begin to turn sour at Carrow Road? He’s at 40/1.
Marco Silva: 100/1 – Paddy Power
A slightly longer shot at 100/1 with Paddy Power (shortest odds) is Everton manager Marco Silva, a gaffer in a similar grave predicament with his side.
What would make Silva an attractive proposition for Ed Woodward and the United hierarchy is the exciting football that he strives for his players to display but it’s hardly effective at Goodison Park at the moment with the Toffees languishing at the wrong end of the English top flight table.
Brendan Rodgers: 15/2 – Paddy Power
There’s been no such misfortune for Brendan Rodgers and his Leicester City in 2019/2020 so far as they are where the Red Devils want and need to be, in the top four.
The Foxes’ form has the ex-Liverpool manager Rodgers as one of the favourites should Solskjaer be sacked, at a mere 15/2 with Paddy Power.
Thomas Tuchel: 30/1 – Marathon Bet
30/1 Thomas Tuchel is widely reputed as one of the best bosses in world football so it’s no surprise to see his hat in the ring for one of the biggest jobs on the planet.
The current Paris Saint-Germain manager is under pressure to deliver a first UEFA Champions League title to the Frenchmen and if he wants to escape that kind of immense heat a move to Manchester would be an interesting rebuilding project with lots of patience likely to be given.
Nuno Espirito Santo: 25/1 – Marathon Bet
Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolverhampton Wanderers have caught the eye since their Premier League promotion two seasons ago, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League in their first term back in the big time.
Since then the Portuguese tactician has been linked to various bigger jobs but has opted to remain at Molineux.
Would United prove tempting for 25/1 Nuno should they approach him, as Wolves struggle with a tad of second season syndrome?
Massimiliano Allegri: 6/1 – Betfair
As Solskjaer’s team has continued to falter, this man has emerged as one of the front runners to succeed the Norweigan and is now just 6-1 with Betfair.
Massimiliano Allegri is presently jobless after leaving Juventus in the summer and boasts a highly impressive résumé which includes no fewer than six Serie A titles, seven Italian domestic cups and two Champions League runner up medals – he could be the ideal fit.
Luis Enrique: 25/1 – Paddy Power
Another supremely successful and relatively young club-less manager in the running is Luis Enrique who most recently managed the Spanish national team.
The 49-year-old was forced to step down from the coveted position the other side of the summer to support his daughter in her tragic battle with the bone cancer that would eventually claim her life in late August.
It’s not known whether or not the former Barcelona player and boss will return to work soon or if he ever will after the tragedy. Nevertheless, Enrique is only 25/1.
Eddie Howe: 25/1 – Marathon Bet
Also at 25/1 is Englishman Eddie Howe – the AFC Bournemouth boss has a chance of becoming the first English boss of Manchester United since Ron Atkison in the 1980s.
After the job he’s done on the south coast, picking up the Cherries from League Two and making them a Premier League regular over two separate spells, a huge job is no less than he deserves although it remains to be seen whether this will be it.
Michael Carrick: 12/1 – Marathon Bet
If Woodward makes the decision to promote from within when looking for his club’s new boss, Michael Carrick will be right at the top of his list of candidates.
The former central midfielder made over 300 appearances at “The Theatre of Dreams” as a player and upon his retirement following the conclusion of the 2017/2018 season moved into a coaching role under then-boss Jose Mourinho – he’s only at the short price of 12/1.
Joachim Low: 40/1 – Marathon Bet
It’s often been wondered when and if Germany head coach Joachim Low will dip back into domestic football having guided his nation to 2014 FIFA World Cup glory and a European final so far in his 13-year reign.
The best it ever got for Low in his club managerial career was Stuttgart and it may just be that the international game is much more suited to his tactics and style. After all, he is all the way out at 40/1 for the United job.
