da bet nacional: Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton expects the sale of the club to the owners of the Boston Red Sox to be given the go-ahead at some point next week.
da jogodeouro: New England Sports Ventures, the parent company of the Major League Baseball franchise, agreed a £300million deal with the Anfield board on Tuesday evening.
Current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are challenging the takeover in the courts as the American pair claim it significantly undervalues the troubled Premier League club.
Hicks and Gillett sought to have Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre removed from the board on Tuesday following an acrimonious day in the Anfield boardroom.
However, Broughton believes the deal, which would effectively clear the club's outstanding debts, could be rubber-stamped as early as next week.
"The key thing is the court case. We need to go to the court to get a declaratory judgement, which is for the court to declare that we did act validly in completing the sale agreement, and then the buyers can complete the sale," he told the club's official website.
"We have to get Premier League approval and I'm certain that's not going to be an issue.
"There are one or two minor things like that but the key issue is the court, which should meet I would think next week sometime."
Asked if the process could be held up in months of court wrangling, he added:"No, I don't think so.
"We should get a declaratory judgement I would have thought probably by the end of next week, in short order.
"There is an appeal process but that is also very fast."
Meanwhile, Broughton has reassured Reds fans that the prospective new owners have pledged to both invest in the playing squad and revisit the issue of a potential new stadium.
Hicks and Gillett have come under fire from fans who are unhappy at a lack of transfer backing for managers and the abandonment of plans to build a new stadium on a site at Stanley Park.
Referring to the likelihood of transfer funds being made available, he explained:"They're not going to make any comments about how much or anything like that.
"But this goes back to the winning mentality. I think the demonstration is: let's look at what they have done at Boston, what they said in Boston, what they have done in terms of investing in players – and I think you get a high degree of confidence of their willingness to do that."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
