da brdice: Sheffield Wednesday have struggled of late due to several players in the squad underperforming, so it feels rather unfair that Jacob Murphy has been singled out for the weaknesses he displayed against Derby on Saturday.
da premier bet: The winger has contributed five goals and one assist this season, making him the Owls’ second-highest scorer, but Championship-focused Second Tier Podcast were quick to criticise some flaws in his performance at the weekend.
In particular, there has been a focus on the 25-year-old’s productivity in the final third, and the fact that he failed to find the target with any of his five shots, while just one of his 17 crosses found a teammate.
Some fans have jumped on the player upon reading those statistics, suggesting that he has not been good enough and that he has a selfish aspect to his game, and since he gave away possession on 33 occasions there could be some truth to that claim.
Although improvement is clearly needed if Wednesday are going to turn their results around, the stats above do at least show that Murphy was heavily involved and looked to put his side on the front foot.
Often in bad runs players can go missing and not show for the ball, but there is no doubting Murphy’s commitment and desire to win, and those characteristics can’t be taken for granted currently.

There are some who are showing their appreciation for Murphy despite the lack of quality on show, with some suggesting that the stats are misleading as he did make some good crosses, but his teammates failed to get on the end of them.
