da prosport bet: As we speak, Leeds United are in a healthy second place in the Championship league table, just three points behind leaders QPR.
da bwin: Who would have given Leeds United even a half a chance of returning to the top tier of English football with such speed? Remember, it was only three and a half years ago that Leeds entered administration and were relegated into the third tier of English football.
They languished in the doldrums of English football for three seasons before finding the form that would see them promoted back into the Championship. As previously noted, Leeds are currently in a great position to take their success a step further by achieving promotion to the Premier League.
Victory over Championship leaders QPR last weekend will have provided the Whites with even more confidence.
Of course, Leeds have a long history in the Premier League. Indeed, for the great majority of their existence, Leeds United have been at the very top level of English football. During the ‘90s and the early ‘00s Leeds were competing for places in Europe. Indeed, before the bubble burst and they were left with financial yolk all over their face, Leeds managed to reach the semi-final of the Champions League.
But the bubble did burst and Leeds fans were forced to suffer through football’s greatest fall from grace. Leed’s chairman Ken Bates believes that his team are on the way back to the top tier of English football. Furthermore, he believes the club has learned from its past mistakes:
“It is a dream of every club, but we will do it on a different basis this time. David O’Leary (former Leeds manager) was allowed to spend money like water, which ultimately caused the club’s collapse. If we get back into Europe, perhaps I should say when we get back into Europe, we will do it on a proper basis. It will be step by step, brick by brick. That is how we are building Leeds. If it means it takes another two or three years then so be it.”
Sensible words. If Leeds United do make their way back into the Premier League, it’s important that they do so without living beyond their means. David O’Leary’s Leeds side – which managed to rack up three consecutive top-four finishes between 1998 and 2001 – was a quality team, but it was only ever living on borrowed time.
Leeds’ FA Cup Clash with Arsenal on January 8th will be an opportunity for the Whites to prove they can still cut it with the big boys. Leeds United have pedigree through and through. Nothing exemplifies this better than their illustrious Premier League history. Whether it happens this year or not, they will make it back into the Premier League and they will fight their way towards success once more.
